Dunmow Reinforcement Scheme

About the
project

Great Dunmow, Essex
Clean Water Engineering

RWP provided detailed design services for the Dunmow Reinforcement Scheme, a clean water trunk main installation to improve supply resilience and capacity in the Great Dunmow area of Essex.

2023 - 2024

The Dunmow Reinforcement Scheme was driven by the need to increase supply capacity and improve resilience in the growing Great Dunmow area. RWP was appointed to provide detailed design for the installation of new trunk main infrastructure.

The design addressed the routing of new mains through a mix of rural and semi-urban environments, requiring careful coordination with highways authorities, landowners and existing utility providers. The scheme included new pipeline installation, connections to the existing network and associated valve chambers.

RWP’s design took account of future development in the area, ensuring the new infrastructure would accommodate planned growth without requiring further intervention.

Dunmow Reinforcement Scheme

Key Challenges

  • Routing through a mix of rural and urban environments.
  • Highway crossings requiring traffic management coordination.
  • Multiple landowner negotiations for route access.
  • Integration with existing network without supply interruption.
  • Future-proofing design for planned local development.

Project Phases

  • Route optioneering and feasibility assessment.
  • Detailed design of pipeline and associated infrastructure.
  • Highway and landowner coordination.
  • Construction support and design queries.
  • Commissioning support.

Achievements

  • Design delivered to programme, enabling timely construction.
  • Route optimised to minimise landowner and highway disruption.
  • Future capacity requirements incorporated into design.
  • Effective coordination with Affinity Water and contractors.
  • Scheme completed without unplanned supply interruptions.

Conclusion

  • Early route optioneering reduces construction risk.
  • Engagement with highways authorities at feasibility stage prevents delays.
  • Future-proofing designs avoids costly future interventions.

The Dunmow Reinforcement Scheme demonstrates RWP’s ability to deliver clean water infrastructure projects from feasibility through to construction support, ensuring supply resilience for growing communities.
